Start Date:2008-01-31  End Date: 2008-02-03

The Student Christian Movement of India, in collaboration with National Youth Foundation, Bangalore. Centre for Youth and Developent Activities, Pune, Centre for Youth and Social Development, Bhubaneshwar, Gandhigram Rural University, Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights, New Delhi and Anubhav Shiksha Kendra, Mumbai had organised a national youth camp, "Youth for Social Action" from 31st January to 3rd February at SCMI Programme Centre, Bangalore. More than 130 students and Youth from all over the country gathered here and understood the implications of the current rapid socio-economic-political scenario on the marginalised, the socially excluded and the discriminated sections of the society.

This workshop is the starting point of a two year process, which will consist of exposure to grassroot realities and the struggle of the people for their rights, and continous participation in social action.

The followings are the relections written by two of the participants from SCMI.

                                                      REFLECTION

The four-day workshop ‘Youth for Social Action’ has been a good experience for me personally as it gave me an opportunity to interact with the other groups of youngsters coming from diverse backgrounds and working on different social issues. Being involved with SCM which is a faith based organization has given us ample opportunity to understand and be committed to many issues in our own closed group, and this was a unique occasion where youth from different organization came together to openly dialogue with each other about the social realities from their own contexts and perspectives.

The workshop was educative as well as interactive. The expert level understanding of issues by different individuals basing on the focus of their organization was another advantage. It offers a way for different movements to network with each other and fight together for a common goal.

It was motivating to see so many young people with so much enthusiasm and commitment displayed explicitly during the workshop. It gave a new lease of hope for our mission, a common mission for a new better world, where equality and justice reigns, a mission, which unites us all in spirit no matter what our background, sex, caste, creed, colour, religion, education, or economic status.

“Youth for Social Action” a National camp held in SCMI National Office from 31st Jan to 3rd Feb, had been a very excellent and wonderful experience for me. In this camp I am challenged and inspired by the various sessions which has been took place. For me as a person, I feel refreshed and satisfied with the whole methodology of the programme. I have learned and gained more from all the sessions. The experience of being involved with a wide group of people from different parts of India with diversified cultures and traditions was an enriching process.

The camp has made me to think and realize about my self, my Identity and to relate it to the various issues like caste, gender, communalism and globalization. All the sessions that I attended, were all innovative and technically sound especially the sessions on Self exploration and Identity. These sessions in turn made me to realize in a far better way about my understanding of the issues related with the society like caste, gender, communalism globalization and more. The individual sessions on the issues has also deeply enhanced my understanding on the issues of caste, gender, communalism, and globalization.

Here in this camp the different experiences shared by many people has made deep impressions in my mind which I consider as rich and precious for my work and ministries, which I am involved with. Also the interactions I had with various language group people have really enriched my friend circles, which also I consider as an achievement from the camp.

Hence, to conclude I must confess by saying that this camp is a state in my life to reflect and enhance my understanding on the Indian society as a whole. This camp had been an agent of inspiration and motivation for my life.
