Reclaiming Nature from Mizoram Context - Rebecca Lalhmangaihzuali

Posted on: 2007-09-07 16:34:11 After passing the hot and humid plains of Assam, you will enter a completely different scenario, the exotic hills of Mizoram (1). You will be welcomed by long winding roads, surrounded by the green forest of bamboo, ironwood, teak and other small trees and shrubs, and a cool moderate climate. And the deeper you go the scenic greenery of the landscape will marvel you. Oh, what a glorious place it is! The empty space is the envy of people in other states, and the sight of jhum cultivation is spectacularly breathtaking. When you breathe the fresh pollution free Mizo air, you’d smell heaven!

In Solidarity with Women's Groups

Start Date:  End Date:

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

This year, on the International Women’s Day, SCMI participated in the protest in solidarity with the struggles of all working and toiling women the world over, organised by KARNATAKA DOMESTIC WORKERS UNION, who demands a weekly day-off, as a basic right to rest and recreation, a continuous struggle for “decent work” and conditions of human dignity at the workplace.

On the 15th March 2007, the Mahila Okkoota (combination of more than 30 women organisations, including SCMI, Women’s Desk) organised a one-day programme at the Bannapa Park, where more than twenty-two women’s issues were addressed. SCMI spoke on the topic “Globalisation and Students” mainly focussing on the problems that women students are facing in the globalised world.
